Thailand requires satellite phones to be registered with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). Unregistered devices may be confiscated. Registration is technically possible but the process is bureaucratic and rarely pursued by short-term visitors. Enforcement in Thailand carries fines from THB 5,000 to THB 500,000 under Customs Act B.E. 2560 (2017) s.202, s.242 (typical personal cases are handled as civil infringements).

Personal satellite phones (Iridium, Inmarsat, Globalstar handsets) fall under dual-use export controls in most jurisdictions administered by the origin-country export-control authority (US EAR, EU Dual-Use Regulation, UK ECJU). Personal-use export is typically permitted under general licence for most destinations, but sanctions-listed destinations (Iran, Syria, North Korea, and periodically others) face licence-required treatment. Destination-country satellite-phone rules are separately restrictive: India, China, Cuba, Sudan, Chad, Vietnam, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and others restrict or prohibit satellite-phone import — always verify destination-side rules before travel.
Contact NBTC before travel if you must bring a satellite phone. Most visitors use local SIM cards instead.
