Japan's Firearm and Sword Possession Control Law makes private firearm ownership functionally impossible without a sport-shooting / hunting permit issued after a 1-year application process. Tourist import is prohibited regardless of US/EU permits; even disassembled or licensed competition firearms require Japanese pre-arrival permit from the Public Safety Commission. Possession of a firearm without permit carries 1-10 years imprisonment under Article 31.

Leaving Japan with firearms
Export of firearms from Japan requires advance authorisation issued before departure under Firearms and Swords Control Law (Ju-tou-hou); export prohibited except for licensed use. Unlicensed firearms export is a serious criminal offence carrying substantial fines and imprisonment. Even properly licensed domestic owners require the separate export authorisation for cross-border movement, and ammunition and firearm parts (barrels, receivers) fall under the same framework. Airlines additionally require advance notice and locked-case carriage in checked baggage.
