Drones (small unmanned aircraft systems, sUAS) are now everywhere — and so are the regulations that govern their import, registration, and use across borders. A drone that flies legally in your home country may be a registration-mandatory device the moment you land elsewhere, and an item like a spare lithium-polymer battery follows IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations entirely separately from the drone itself.
This guide compiles the rules you need to fly a drone — or even just bring one through customs — across the major destinations. It is sourced from each destination's civil-aviation authority (FAA, CAA, MLIT, CASA, DGCA, etc.) and is updated against the per-country pages at /drones.
The three-axis rule framework
Every drone-rules destination operates on three axes:

Registration threshold. The weight (or in some cases, "any drone with a camera") at which you must register the device with the destination's civil-aviation authority. Common thresholds: 250g (FAA, CASA, DGCA, GCAA, NPark CAAS), 100g (Japan MLIT), 800g (France DGAC), or "any" (Thailand CAAT, Philippines CAAP, Indonesia DGCA, UAE).

Flight rules. Maximum altitude (commonly 120m / 400ft AGL), no-fly zones (always 5+ km from airports, government / military areas, crowded events), visual-line-of-sight requirement (almost universal), and Remote ID (US since Sept 2023, Japan since June 2022, India under DGCA Drone Rules 2021).

Carriage rules. The drone itself moves as a personal-electronics item (typically zero or low duty), but the flight batteries are IATA DG Class 9 lithium-polymer. Spare batteries must travel in carry-on only, with watt-hour limits: under 100 Wh free, 100-160 Wh airline approval required, over 160 Wh forbidden in passenger baggage.
The carriage problem
Most travelers' drone-flight-related problem isn't the drone — it's the batteries. A DJI Mavic 3 Pro battery is 77 Wh (clears free). A DJI Inspire 2 battery is 97 Wh (also clears, but DJI Inspire 3 batteries are 200+ Wh and are forbidden in passenger baggage entirely; they must ship as cargo with a DG-trained shipper).
Always carry batteries in carry-on, terminals protected (factory case or insulating tape over contacts). At security, lithium batteries may be inspected — be ready to power on the device. Keep the drone case + battery list accessible.

Some destinations (Thailand, India, UAE) require pre-arrival registration — you cannot register at the airport on arrival. Always check the destination page at /drones/[country] before you book the flight.
No-fly zones you must know
The "5 km from any airport" rule is universal. Beyond that:
- Royal palaces + government buildings are no-fly in Thailand, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Cambodia. Confiscation + prosecution can follow.
- National parks are no-fly under FAA Part 107 in the US, KAA in Kenya, Parks Canada in Canada.
- Stadiums during events are universally restricted.
- Defence-restricted areas in India, China, Russia, Iran, North Korea — even possession of a drone near these triggers detention.
Common gotchas

DJI geofencing. DJI's GEO 2.0 system updates dynamically. A drone that flew yesterday may refuse takeoff today because DJI added the location to its no-fly database (often before the destination's own rules change). Check DJI's GEO map before travel.

Pilot certification recognition. Most destinations do NOT recognize foreign drone-pilot licences. You may need to pass a destination-specific knowledge test even with FAA Part 107 / EASA A2.

Insurance. Public-liability insurance is mandatory in France, Germany, Spain, and increasingly in commercial-operation tiers everywhere. Tourist-fly is often uninsured — limit your exposure.

Returning home with footage. Some destinations (China, Iran, Russia, India, UAE) impose content rules on aerial footage. You may be asked to show footage at exit; sensitive locations may trigger device seizure. Back up to cloud before reaching the airport.
