Leaving New Zealand with vape / e-cigarette
Vape devices, personal e-cigarette hardware, and nicotine-containing e-liquids are generally free to export from New Zealand at personal-use quantities. However, many destinations (Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, India in commercial quantities, and others) prohibit or heavily restrict vape import — always verify the destination-side rules before travel. Lithium-battery-powered devices should be carried in cabin baggage per IATA DGR (never in checked baggage).
Available. Nicotine products not approved for general sale may be surrendered at NZ Customs. Declare at the Border. Customs will confiscate; no fine for voluntary disclosure of personal-quantity vape items.
Duty-free allowances: 4.5L wine or beer OR 1.125L spirits (17+); 50 cigarettes or 50g tobacco or 50g cigars (17+); NZD $700 (approx. USD $430) worth of other goods. Exceeding limits means duty and GST on the excess.
Carry the device in carry-on (never checked baggage — lithium battery rule). Quantities above the personal-use threshold for New Zealand must be declared to NZ Customs with proof of purchase; e-liquid containers obey the standard 100 ml carry-on liquid rule.
