Full details
Italy, as an EU Member State, enforces Regulation (EC) 206/2009 which bans personal consignments of meat and meat products from non-EU countries. This includes processed, cured, and fresh meats of all animal species. The prohibition is designed to prevent introduction of foot-and-mouth disease and other animal pathogens. Italian customs (Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli) and veterinary border posts (Posti di Ispezione Frontaliera) enforce the ban. Non-compliant items are confiscated and may result in administrative fines. Products from other EU Member States meeting EU sanitary standards are generally exempt.
PENALTIES
- Fine: 5000–100000 EUR
- Imprisonment up to 60 months
- Criminal penalty
Occasional — Enforcement reported intermittently.
Leaving Italy with meat products
Personal-use quantities of processed, cooked, or shelf-stable meat products (jerky, cured meats, canned meats) may generally be exported from Italy for personal consumption; destination-country biosecurity restrictions on arrival are typically the binding constraint. Raw meat, poultry, and offal require a veterinary-issued Export Health Certificate for commercial or above-personal-use export. Many destinations (Australia, New Zealand, Japan, US, EU) restrict or prohibit personal-import of raw and cooked meat regardless of origin-side export permissions.
Do not pack meat products from non-EU countries in your luggage for travel to Italy. Consume or dispose of them before boarding your flight to avoid confiscation at the border.
