Taiwan restricts import of New Taiwan Dollars to TWD 100,000. Foreign currency above USD 10,000 equivalent must be declared. RMB (Chinese yuan) is limited to RMB 20,000 due to cross-strait relations. Travelers should check current regulations before departure as rules change frequently. Carry all relevant documentation including prescriptions and purchase receipts. Declare items proactively at customs to avoid penalties.

Leaving Taiwan with cash / currency
Travellers departing from Taiwan carrying cash, banker's cheques, bearer bonds, or other bearer-form negotiable instruments totalling USD 10,000 (foreign currency) / TWD 100,000 (local currency) or more must complete the Taiwan Customs declaration (red channel) at customs before boarding. This threshold aggregates all currencies at exchange-rate parity. Failure to declare is grounds for seizure of the entire cash amount under Money Laundering Control Act; Foreign Exchange Regulation Act plus criminal prosecution for aggravated cases. Source-of-funds documentation may be requested. Legitimate declared movements are not restricted; the requirement is transparency-based to combat money laundering and tax evasion.
