Full Details

USDA APHIS prohibits mailing fresh fruit to the US from most countries to prevent agricultural pest transmission. Only fruit from countries with specific pre-clearance agreements may be shipped, and only through approved commercial channels with phytosanitary certificates. Enforcement in United States carries fines from USD 500 to USD 500,000 and imprisonment up to 20 years in aggravated cases under 18 USC § 545 (smuggling); 18 USC § 1341 (mail fraud); 39 USC § 3001.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Do not mail fresh fruit to the US. It will be intercepted and destroyed by APHIS. If unsure, declare on arrival — declared goods at worst attract duty or surrender, while undeclared goods found in screening are seized and fined.
