India requires professional cameras and associated equipment (multiple lenses, lighting, tripods, large sensor video cameras) to be declared at customs upon arrival. Professional photographic equipment is subject to import duty unless the traveller can prove temporary importation for personal use. An ATA Carnet (international customs document) is strongly recommended for professional equipment. Without a Carnet, customs may require a temporary importation deposit equivalent to the duty payable (up to 28% + GST). News crews and film crews must obtain Ministry of Information and Broadcasting credentials. Tourism photographers with a single DSLR and one or two lenses are rarely challenged.

Leaving India with professional camera
Personal-use professional camera equipment may be taken out of India without export formalities. High-value kits carried for professional work may warrant registering serial numbers with customs before departure (or an ATA Carnet for commercial gear) so the equipment re-enters duty-free on return. Some destinations require permits for professional filming equipment on arrival.
For a single DSLR or mirrorless camera, you are unlikely to face issues. For multiple bodies, large lens sets, or video equipment, obtain an ATA Carnet from your national chamber of commerce before travel.
