Travelers entering or leaving Mexico with cash, traveler's cheques or monetary instruments worth USD 10,000 or more must declare via SAT Customs Declaration. Undeclared amounts above the threshold are subject to 20-40% administrative fine; over USD 30,000 undeclared is treated as money laundering under the federal anti-laundering law. Mexican-peso equivalents are computed using the Banco de Mexico daily reference rate.

Leaving Mexico with cash / currency

RESTRICTEDMexico requires declaration when leaving with cash and bearer-form negotiable instruments above USD 10,000.

Travellers departing from Mexico carrying cash, banker's cheques, bearer bonds, or other bearer-form negotiable instruments totalling USD 10,000 or more must complete Declaración de Efectivo at customs before boarding. This threshold aggregates all currencies at exchange-rate parity. Failure to declare is grounds for seizure of the entire cash amount under Ley Aduanera Art. 9 plus criminal prosecution for aggravated cases. Source-of-funds documentation may be requested. Legitimate declared movements are not restricted; the requirement is transparency-based to combat money laundering and tax evasion.

QUANTITY CHECK

USD

Values at or above this threshold must be declared (MXN).

PRACTICAL ADVICE

Declare cash, traveler's cheques, or monetary instruments above the local threshold to SAT Aduanas on arrival or departure. Use the dedicated currency-declaration channel; undeclared amounts above the threshold are subject to seizure and an administrative fine of 25-50% of the undeclared sum.
