Antiquities trade is governed by both domestic cultural property laws and international agreements, including the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Prope. Enforcement in Thailand carries fines from THB 5,000 to THB 500,000 under Customs Act B.E. 2560 (2017) s.202, s.242 (typical personal cases are handled as civil infringements).

Export of Thai antiquities is prohibited under the Ancient Monuments, Antiques, Objects of Art and National Museums Act B.E. 2504 (1961). All items over 100 years old require Fine Arts Department (FAD) permit.

Practical advice

Carry documentation. Declare proactively at customs. If unsure, declare on arrival — declared goods at worst attract duty or surrender, while undeclared goods found in screening are seized and fined.
