Leaving New Zealand with antiquities
New Zealand controls the export of antiquities and significant cultural objects under Protected Objects Act 1975 (export approval for taonga and protected New Zealand objects). Objects within the protected categories require an export permit or clearance issued before departure; unpermitted export risks seizure and prosecution, and repatriation claims follow items sold abroad. Purchased antique-style items should carry dealer invoices identifying age and origin so customs can distinguish them from protected material. Destination-side, many countries enforce origin-country claims under the 1970 UNESCO Convention — provenance paperwork matters on both sides.
New Zealand restricts import of Antiquities. Cultural-property protection is bilateral: both origin export rules and destination import rules apply. Carry provenance documentation demonstrating lawful acquisition and (where applicable) origin-country export licence. Museum-loan and dealer-import categories operate under separate frameworks with pre-approved dealer registration.
This page covers destination customs rules in New Zealand. Whether you can carry antiquities through security, in carry-on, or in checked baggage depends on airline and screening rules — see air travel rules.
